Activity Description: South Africa's Thando Papers harvests alien, environmetally degrading reeds from the wetlands and rivers on the outskirts of Cape Town for use in its papermaking enterprise.

Additional environmentally friendly sources include sisal, tree bark and soft wood fibre. Horse, rhino, and elephant dung are even used to make paper in one of the company's novelty items.

Founder Joseph Diliza received training from the University of Cape Town's Graduate School of Business' Supporting Emerging Enterprises Program, and training in business management skills from MBA students. He has trained six others and runs workshops for the disabled, instructing them in the papermaking art.

Products include lampshades, greeting cards, picture frames and photograph albums. An expensive and much needed piece of machinery - the Hollander beater - was provided by South African Breweries.
