Robert Redford will host a new series on the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) that highlights 14 social entrepreneurs. Funded by the Skoll Foundation, Calvert and The Flora Family Fund, "The New Heroes" will premier tonight, Tuesday, June 28th.

One of the featured entrepreneurs, Maria Teresa Leal, is a WRI New Ventures Mentoring recipient. Leal is the founder of Coopa-Roca, a cooperative that melds traditional craftwork and high fashion, while providing economic opportunities and training for its members. I wasn't able to tune in last night, and I live in a TiVo-less home. Did anyone catch the program and, if so, what did you think? What should we look for in next week's installment?

I didn't catch the series, either, but I did recently discover this interesting link: http://www.ashoka.org/home/index.cfm check it out if you're interested in how social entrepreneurs have created change throughout the world. The Ashoka Foundation funds select entrepreneurs.

Global Giving together with the Skoll Foundation is sponsoring a "House Party" initiative, distributing free DVDs of the program. They encourage you to invite folks who may be less familiar with the subject matter to get together to watch the programs with the objective of getting more people to support these entrepreneurial efforts. A link to the DVDs is at www.globalgiving.com

You can also check out the PBS website, which has pretty good summaries of the program. http://www.pbs.org/opb/thenewheroes/about/
