Conducting field research in the developing world is, under any circumstances, a complex affair, and the study of information and communication technologies (ICTs) in this context adds yet another series of special challenges.  The description of the challenges and opportunities encountered are meant to serve as guidelines rather than prescriptions.  The paper is meant to contribute to the debate on the use of ICTs for economic and social change, providing a candid description of what is happening 'in the field' in order to counter the often blind confidence that surrounds ICTs as a tool for development.
