Activity Description:
The International Institute for Communication and Development (IICD) is an independent, non-profit organization that assists developing countries to realise locally-owned, sustainable development, by harnessing the potential of information and communication technologies (ICTs). IICD works with its partner organisations in (currently nine) selected countries, helping local stakeholders to assess the potential uses of ICTs in development.
The goal is apply ICT tools to contribute to sustainable development and poverty alleviation--but not to reinvent the wheel. Therefore, IICD focuses on applying ICTs to 'traditional' development sectors, such as education, governance, health, livelihood opportunities (especially agriculture) and environment. Before starting any projects, IICD always convenes a small network of committed local organisations and stakeholders - public, private and non-profit - for a Roundtable workshop to analyse the potential of ICTs for development and set priorities for future actions. Consequently, after each workshop, project partners formulate sector-wide ICT policy plans and project proposals. Local institutions are individually responsible for the implementation, financing, and management of these projects and policies. |
