Activity Description: Formed by the Zambian Government and later privatised, the North Western Bee Products employs over 6000 beekeepers, producing over 200 metric tons of honey and 50 metric tons of beeswax a year.

Using traditional methods, the beekeepers hoist cylindrical hives made from bark high into the trees, which they later climb to harvest. This environmentally sustainable practice yields honey that is free of pesticides, additives, bacteria, anti-biotics and pollution.

All the beekeepers are shareholders and the local district council has a 17% share in the business. 80% of the product is exported to Europe, to stores such as Waitrose and Sainsburys and to The Body Shop for use in their products.
