Activity Description: SafeSend is an innovative ATM remittance service by Bank of America that offers a safe and low-cost way for Hispanics living in the United States to send money home to Mexico. The sender in the US must first open a SafeSend account, which carries no annual fee or minimum balance. He/she can then use an automatic teller machine (ATM), the phone or the Internet to put money into the account 24 hours a day, saving time compared to waiting in line. Bank of America will then DHL a SafeCard to the sender's family in Mexico, which they can use along with a 4-digit PIN provided by the sender to withdraw money from the account at 20,000 Bank of America ATMs nationwide. As opposed to money-wiring where a percentage or a flat rate of no less than $10 is imposed, Bank of America only imposes a $3 ATM withdrawal fee on the account holder, and this fee is waived for the first withdrawal following each deposit into the account. As Bank of America is willing to accept the Mexican Consular Identity Card (Matricula Consula) - a digitally coded consular ID issued by Mexican consulates in the USA to give identity to legal and illegal immigrants - SafeSend will help many low-income Mexicans a safe and low-cost way to send money home.
