Uganda: Bona Bagaggawale: Co-Operatives Would More Effectively Serve the Poverty Eradication Purpose

Abstract: After dabbling in microfinance, Uganda, under the leadership of a new finance minister, is reintroducing the cooperative system as the core of its rural development program. This article also includes interesting commentary on microfinance.

As Dr. Augustus Nuwagaba notes about Uganda's experience wiht microfinance, "Uganda's poverty eradication programmes are usually implemented in a poor way and during time of electioneering. In the end, people perceive the (funds they receive) under the schemes as a reward for their votes, thus leading to misuse of the funds and the reluctance to pay back".

I have been to Uganda four times; specifically in Bwindi to collect and record the stories of the Batwa pygmies. While there, I have become aware of the plight of the Batwa. Since they have no way of making a living, I would like to start a volunteer artist program to train the Batwa how to make products that would sell at a cooperative. For example, ceramics, beaded work, woodcarving, weaving. I need funding for the materials that would stay in Bwindi. I am pursuing grants and would like to know if you have any suggestions. Thank you so much for your help.
