Nurturing Startups Trying To Reduce Pollution From Plastic

Thursday, June 19, 2014

The problem of plastic pollution is so vast, it deserves a business accelerator for startups focused only on reducing all that waste.

Now there is one.

Called the Think Beyond Plastic Business Accelerator, it’s a registered benefit corporation that‘s part of Beyond Plastic, a recently-launched larger initiative. (Benefit corporations are for-profit social enterprises that, by law, have to take into consideration the interests of such constituents as the community and employees, in addition to the financial bottom line).

Headquartered in Menlo Park, the accelerator mostly operates virtually, with companies traveling to HQ every month. Startups can tap the usual mentors and funding opportunities, but they also have access to major brands interested in sustainability. Also, the accelerator is open to companies that are past the super-early phase, with revenues, say, or a product ready to go to market, as well as pre-seed-stage startups. There may be a pitch day at the end, but that’s being worked out. In any event, the goal is to help companies get to the next level.
