Living Goods: The Avon of Rural Health 

Help Create the first Fully Sustainable System for Defeating the Diseases of Poverty

Living Goods operates Avon-like networks of village-based mobile health entrepreneurs that combine the latest and best practices from the worlds of microfinance, franchising, and public health to create the first truly sustainable system for defeating diseases of poverty. Living Goods' health entrepreneurs reduce illness and death by significantly improving access to and adoption of simple, proven health interventions. LG is also a powerful engine of economic development, improving livelihoods by providing women a reliable source of income as Health Promoters by keeping wage earners healthy and productive, and by averting costly medical treatments. LG plans to scale rapidly in East Africa and replicate broadly across the developing world. LG operates in joint venture with BRAC in Uganda and has a waiting list of multi-national NGOs who want to partner to replicate the LG model in other countries. Future expansion includes extending the Living Goods brand into micro franchise businesses in water, energy, and agriculture. 

LG is seeking an energetic and resourceful Uganda Country Program Officer to help navigate the organizations' rapid growth. The PO will contribute to the continuous improvement of LG's operations in Uganda, will generate and develop opportunities for expansion, and assist act as local representative for LG. The right candidate will be happy in a dynamic start up environment and be willing to roll up their sleeves and take on big tasks and small. The position is based in Kampala and reports to the Associate Director of Living Goods as well as the Uganda Country Director for BRAC, Living Goods primary operating partner. 

Responsibilities

  • Become an expert in key aspects of Living Goods operations: training, marketing, sourcing, logistics/ inventory management, pricing, reporting, etc
  • Work with LG staff and local partners to assure timely, accurate reporting
  • Assist local partner(s) and LG staff on development and execution of marketing plans to improve productivity of Community Health Promoters
  • Support local partners and LG staff on effectiveness, accuracy, consistency and quality of product pricing and inventory management
  • Assist and support with sourcing new products and supplier negotiations
  • Scout out and perform due diligence on potential operating partners for Living Goods in other countries
  • Collaborate and coordinate with local partners to streamline delivery of services 
  • Help document the Living Goods System
  • Participate in weekly meetings at each of BRAC and LG offices
  • Coordinate and escort important visitors to Living Goods/BRAC project sites including: major donors, potential partners, government representatives, etc
  • Identify and help cultivate potential funders as appropriate.
  • In the future, the program officer will recruit and staff replication teams as well as oversee joint venture replication divisions in one or more countries
  • Other projects as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of five years experience in one or more of the following: microfinance, packaged goods sales/marketing, social marketing, direct selling, pharma marketing
  • Track record of success and 
  • Experience managing teams; cross-cultural management experience a plus  
  • Experience working in developing countries; East Africa a plus 
  • Comfortable in unstructured situations and can work well with limited oversight
  • Commitment to Living Goods principles and approach
  • MBA preferred but not required.
