Start Up!

About Start Up!

Start Up! (www.startup-india.org) is an angel investor, incubator and consultant to social entrepreneurs. We launch, strengthen, and scale social ventures that create lasting impact.

What We Do

As angel investors, we invest non-financial resources to incubate and scale social enterprises. Our investments of time and expertise are geared to put ventures quickly on their feet and make them scale and capital ready.

Our investees include a radio cab company – for women, by women – with women chauffeurs from resource-constrained communities of Delhi; a rural school of entrepreneurship for women micro-entrepreneurs in Maharashtra; a national market aggregator and brand for products made by persons with disabilities and a technology-enabled rural healthcare model for seasonal migrant labour of Rajasthan.

As consultants, we get excited about:

  • Scaling social change models
  • Developing the next generation of innovations for social enterprises and CSOs
  • Assessing the impact of social change ideas and processes
  • Putting change models on sustainability paths
  • Engaging with social entrepreneurs through due diligence processes

What Our First Batch of Summer Fellows (2012) Has to Say!

“Working at Start Up! was a great opportunity for me to learn about innovative models of social enterprises in India. I was able to hear first-hand from a wide variety of social entrepreneurs about their challenges and successes in starting up and scaling up. With a small team, Start Up! does impressive, high-quality work, and its clients work to improve the lives of the poorest in India. It's an inspiring place to be.”

- Hannah Schiff, Master of Arts in Law and Diplomacy, The Fletcher School, Tufts University

Hannah brought to Start Up! five years of professional experience in the domain of micro-enterprise development. She conducted an exhaustive benchmarking study and market assessment for a rural technology-enabled primary healthcare model for seasonal migrant labour in Rajasthan – a venture which is currently being incubated by Start Up!

“My summer as a Summer Fellow at Start Up! fit so well in terms of what I was looking for in an internship. I had the opportunity to acclimate myself in a completely new culture and environment, work with a very entrepreneurial team and client, and see what management consulting is like in an emerging market. Furthermore, I was able to apply my HR background and learnings from business school in my projects. Looking back on the 3 months, I am happy to have been a Summer Fellow at Start Up!”

- Jennifer Hsieh, Stephen M. Ross School of Business, University Of Michigan

With seven years of work experience in HR and Wealth Management, Jennifer played a key role in building scale solutions for a leading Delhi-based education enterprise. She was part of the team that developed Start Up’s five year business plan and internal HR systems, policies and manual.

"Start Up’s unique market position and strong reputation offered me the ideal opportunity to interact with a wide variety of social entrepreneurs. My work during the fellowship program included a demand assessment for an impact accelerator program as well as consulting engagements across rural healthcare, migrant banking and spacial design. I had high expectations going in to the summer fellows program and Start Up! did not disappoint."

- Justus Killian, USA, Booth School of Business, University of Chicago

A Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA), Justus has worked at Merrill Lynch for four years. Among other projects, he conceptualized and led the market assessment and design of an Impact Accelerator Program that Start Up! is planning to launch.
