EDU Bargain

Whitney's program is certainly ambitious, but due to the fact that education really is hard to afford (and getting harder) I believe they have a shot at making a difference in the world's skilled worker market. Of course, everything comes down to how good their online courses really are, which remains to be seen, but if they're decent enough to learn from, I'm hopeful that they'll be able to educate some of the abjectly poor people around the world that are smart and talented enough to do great things.
Social Enterprise

Looking around me at all the information out there on homelessness and social enterprise I'm afraid I see very little in the way of people who have experienced homelessness being encouraged to start their own SE's.

I see lots of charities starting SE's in order to gain income to provide services but what if we encouraged more people who have been homeless to start their own businesses that would contribute either to the end of homelessness or to some other cause they feel pasionate about? We would then be developing employment for the individual or individuals concerned while at the same time developing the potential for other disadvantaged people to become employed.

I feel there is a lot of work to be done in promoting social enterprise to people who have become disadvantaged in some way as a means of raising their income and self esteem at the same time while also helping their community.

While those who understand the benefits of Social Enterprise and are passionate about it can enter debates and discuss the best methods of delivering results etc I wonder if we're all missing the point somewhat.

Are we including the proposed beneficiaries of those services we hope to provide as well as we might? Are we helping to educate them as perhaps we might or are we just discussing and growing our knowledge with and through our respective organisations and in fact widening the gap between us and those we seek to help?

I think there is much to gain from business and business methods and structure in a personal development sense for individuals who have led somewhat chaotic lifestyles. I also think there is a wealth of untapped talent in this country and a wealth of potential entrepreneurs who will not make it to market if we do not start to look at things a little differently.

Are we creating businesses that will end up giving people fish rather than teaching them how to fish all over again? I hope not!

At Network 2012 we have a strategy for including people who are financially excluded and we are keen to provide sponsored places for those who are marginalised. We will always endeavour to keep the beneficiaries of our proposed bursaries not only in mind but in the discussion, planning and implementation of what we hope to achieve!
NGOs too much social engineering

I personaly deliver medical equipment to a third world country in Asia. Rather than delivery tangible long term reconstruction, that makes the NGO superfluous, they focus on social engineering and touchy feely stuff. They are also very poor at reporting back to donors with actual footage of what they have done with the money. Yeah buy the wrist band, get the T-shirt and go to a Bono concert but dont worry about whether poverty is actually reduced. thats right dont forget to blame it on companies and you have today's typical NGO.
I'm really keen to see poor countries supported with new technology programmes. Technology is a key enabler for progress and holds many places back enormously.

I once came across a news article about an academic who had studied the most war-torn countries and areas of the world. He did statistical studies to compare their economic well-being with their state of war and there is a very strong correlation between poverty and war/strife.

If we can educate and improve the economic circumstances of poor countries, we stand to improve living conditions for millions.

Brilliant.

Other Innovative Educational Models - In the Same Context

The proposed solution seems viable and innovative.

I should highlight here other innovative education models that has been notably successful...the one being a Foundation that has been providing a robust platform for upliftment of the less privileged slum kids in Mumbai region, India. It runs its several centers across the region and has been providing high-quality education and leadership programs to the children living in slums. Additionally this model has been successful in: providing the civic participation access to learning; creatively using existing school and other resources; and development of Teaching Aids for the kids. (I've been involved in one of its novel program where they help flourish mentor relationships between kids and professionals from corporate world).

I guess we need more such models at the grass-root levels...

+Keep The Faith.
