Nopp, I agree with your comment about the importance of ongoing maintenance with these projects. This can be built into the financing through insurance (which would have to mean that the financier and the company providing the technology have a trusting relationship) or a maintenance/service contract with the supplier. It is certainly an area that could use some innovative partnerships, especially when loans are being financed for the project. You don't want someone to default on a loan because of product failure. Then everybody loses.

Jon, I'm glad that you are looking into this area in a bit more depth. I have sent a request to a few people to get in touch with you regarding private sector clean energy investments in China. From the little that I know, there has been top-down pressure (from the centralized government) for sustainability in general, but there have not been many grassroots initiatives. If you don't hear from them, feel free to send me an email at gaugust@bus.umich.edu. Good luck with your research!

SOLAR & WIND POWERED HOUSE ...A/C & LIFT

Hello Friedrich/Antonio/Elmer,

My name is Jun and I'm planning to put up a second story house (Ground and First level will be for a (3) door appartment for rent). The houseI plan to put up in the rooftop will incorporate passive and active solar power technology. My main concern is how to get up and down from the rooftop as my parents are quite elderly and my dad has emphysema and can not come up and down a plight of stairs. So does my mother who is elderly. Is there a lift that can be run by solar power to provide access to the rooftop? Also is there already an A/C than can run thru solar energy? I've always seen lighting/TV/and home entertainment supported by the solar technology but have not seen A/C yet. My father would need this as he has difficulty breathing on extreme hot weather.

Also in Imus, Cavite(Lat 14 deg 25 min 48.29sec Long 120deg 56min 31.46sec)is it possible to incorporate a grid-intertied solar and wind power system as there are times that no wind is blowing at all except for frequent tropical monsoons. Can a wind turbine withstand Class5 typhoon wind gusts of up to 210-230 kph?

And finally,do you have a passive solar house design that can maximize the green house effect in cooling the house?Do you have a house design that can maximize sunlight to illuminate the house but not increase indoor temperatures? What kind of window glass do you have that can work together with the technology but not dissipate cool gains in house temperature? This will lessen the use of A/C in the long summer and maintain heat in the monsoon season. How much do you think it will cost to put the system up that can handle (15) 40Watts fluorescent bulbs, a washing machine if the whole floor area is around 4,670 sq. ft.? (I intend to maximize the area to include an enclosed garden/solarium)
Hi,

I live in Bacolod City Negros Occidental, and I wish to opt using Solar Electricity.

Can you advice me how can we have this, how much it cost monthly and what will be the necessary materials for installation, as well as the installation cost? Will there be any maintenance after the installation, and will there be any danger in using it.

Hope to here the soonest.

Thanks
Congrats to MEC for such an innovative and integrated approach to developing the clean energy sector of the BOP. Also, thanks to Grace for her fantastic reporting and keeping us informed on all the developments!
I am a University of California student recently returning from studying development in New Delhi, and working for ITDG in Kathmandu. I am currently researching BOP investment strategies and success in poverty alleviation through the renewable energy and micro finance sectors in India and China. I was wondering if anyone knows of schemes such as this, or renewable energy development investment by the private sector in China, as I have had a very difficult time finding information! This site has been an invaluable resource for me, and I thank everyone who contributes and everyone who is working so hard innovating unique solutions to improve the conditions of those in poverty.

Best,
Jon

Clean energy is a very good source for local poor, but the problem is (according to my conversation with local people) the providers of such energy abadoned the clean energy projects after few or several years leaving local people to take care of maintenance etc. Local people could do it only if everything goes well, otherwise they also abandon the projects. My suggestion is clean energy providers should have a long-term plan for helping them, do not assume they can do the job after some years. Probably, they know how, but they can not do.
