I'm really keen to see poor countries supported with new technology programmes. Technology is a key enabler for progress and holds many places back enormously. I once came across a news article about an academic who had studied the most war-torn countries and areas of the world. He did statistical studies to compare their economic well-being with their state of war and there is a very strong correlation between poverty and war/strife. "There are billions of people who need the great inventions of the computer age," he asserted. "Breakthroughs change lives only where people can afford to buy them."

Conspicuously missing from the appeal, which asserted that human nature is not just driven by greed but also by concern for our fellow beings, was any reference to the work and thinking of the Nobel Peace Prize winner Muhammad Yunus.
