It's remarkable how in this particular case, the poverty of a nation actually has the potential to feed a nation.
Good Dirt?

From what I have read in the past however, isn't soil quality one of the possible negitive factors of this idea. Mainly due to rural poor areas not having limited access to farming technology and techniques. Often the land and soil is depleted and/or over-used.

Just a discussion piece to add.
LA organic - broken link

Hi GLG, thanks for the comment. Seems the link is broken, however. Care to sum up the basic gist of what's going on with organic labor issues in LA? How might that impact low-income producers in other countries, particularly Mexico? And one question I've had for a while - if organic goes huge and commercial, is it still the same 'feel-good' agriculture we've always known?
Nice to hear things're working for organic farmers in Turkey, but in Los Angeles, our organic farmers have serious labor issues :( I just don't know how we can work to get them resolved --
Fighting Poverty with Organic Agriculture

Today, the Asia Times published an interesting piece on Nazmi Ilicali, a farmer in Eastern Turkey who has made organic agriculture the centerpiece in the fight against rural poverty. Mr. Ilicali’s efforts have gained him international attention and just last year he was honored by the prestigious Ashoka Entrepreneur Trust. Below I have provided some of the most interesting excerpts from the article:

Why organic agriculture?

He explains why, ironically, the poverty of this area makes it perfect for starting organic farming projects: "The earth in this area is especially suitable, because the local population is so poor that for years they have been unable to afford chemical fertilizers. The climate is good for organic agriculture, too. The frost and cold here even kill the eggs laid in the earth by insects, and because of that there is no need for pesticides - we have a totally chemical-free soil."
