Business people Should infuence good Governance

Both the Multi National enterprises and the Local business persons should have a coparate responsibility to ensure that the policical atmosphere and the values that are cherished by leaders in developing countries can nurture and sustain development. As long as companies get fovours and political patronage then you can not expect much effort towards eradicating poverty. If the private sector encourages corruption in awarding tenders then, in countries like Uganda (East Africa) will continue to have bad leaders and once there is bad leadership then the talk about a walfare state will remain a Myth.
The west should think about helping the poor know that they have a right to good leaders and sound values like honest, respect for the law and tolorence
Harvard Global Poverty Conference

"The question is not whether business has a role to play in alleviating poverty. We know that. The question is how." With that statement, Harvard Business School Professor Kash Rangan opened a gathering of academics, business leaders from around the world, and development officials to discuss more than 30 research papers on the role of business in serving low-income communities. The companies presenting or whose efforts were being analyzed include Shell, Nestle, Ogilvy and Mather India, Cemex, Intel, Kodak, ITC, Hindustan Lever, Manila Water Company, and Shorebank. Social entrepreneurs and development agencies and their roles figure into the discussions too -- nobody thinks companies can do this alone.

I invite colleagues to share their thoughts either by commenting here, or by posting new ideas to the NextBillion.net site. Please contact us if you have any questions.
