(With Video) One Acre Fund’s Drive Toward Sustainable Farming and Sustainable Finance: An interview with Stephanie Hanson

Today is Thanksgiving here in the United States. So it seemed mildly appropriate that we take time to think a bit about farmers that bring forth our bounty, not just in the U.S., but around the world.

I had the pleasure of speaking with Stephanie Hanson, Director of Policy and Outreach at One Acre Fund, a nonprofit based in East Africa. One Acre Fund has provided loans, training and other agricultural services to 130,000 farmers in four countries since it first launched in 2006.

Hanson, who was one of the panelists in a session on sustainable agriculture at the BoP Summit, said One Acre will be 75 percent self-sustainable in terms of its field operations across all four countries by the end of the year. She provides more details on One Acre’s recent past, its journey forward and what inspires her about the future of sustainable farming across Africa.

Check out our interview below as well as the panel discussion which included Hanson; Maya Horii, associate principal at McKinsey & Company; and Denise Knight, director, Sustainable Agriculture at Coca-Cola.
