P2.8M-village coconut mill to alleviate poverty

Members of the Lawa Workers Multi-Purpose Cooperative established the first village-level coconut oil processing mill worth P2.870 million in Barangay Lawa, Don Marcelino, Davao del Sur to help alleviate poverty in the municipality.

The cooperative built the Lawa Integrated Coconut Processing Plant with the assistance of the United Nations Development Program-Support for Agrarian Reform Development for Indigenous Community, Land Bank of the Philippines, and Department of Land Reform.

The plant can process 10,000 nuts or the equivalent of 2,250 kilos of copra per sixteen hours (two shift) operation into 1,140 kilos or 1,239 liters of refined, bleached and deodorized cooking oil as the main product and 680 kg. copra cake daily as one of its by-products.

Dear sir/madam I was very interested in what you were able to do for the local community and that's why I am writing to see what we can for the local community, here in Borneo. Our group has various businesses out here, predominantly low impact environmentally friendly tourism related. Our largest project at the moment is a super high end yet super low impact environmentally responsible luxury villa resort. see: www.exquisiteborneovillas.com The Peninsula is known as the coconut capital of Borneo and is an area some 30miles x 50miles of coconut plantations, which regretably are slowly being sold off, being a diminishing industry....to palm oil people... As well as our resort project attempting to provide as much in renewable energy as possible, we pride ourselves in using organic fruit & vegetables and to working to help the local communities and industries stay afloat. We are desperately trying to save the coconut plantations of Borneo and work very closely with the Ministry of environment. With this in mind, I was wondering what you have, if any, in Sabah, Malaysia and how we can help the local community. I would appreciate any thoughts/ideas you may have. My number (should you want to call me) is 0060 19813 5454. I really look forward to hearing from you shortly. Best regards Rory
