Activity Description: The Solar Tuki project of the Environmental Camps for Conservation Awareness (ECCA) offers rural inhabitants of Nepal a solar based lighting system, which incorporates White Light Emitting Diodes (WLED) technology, as a brighter, cleaner, and safer alternative to commonly used "wicked" kerosene lamps.

Each Solar Tuki lighting systems consists of two rechargeable batteries receiving charge from a solar photo voltaic panel. The lamp unit also has a 3 volt outlet for connecting a FM/AM radio.

A 2005 project winner in the World Bank's Development Marketplace competition, ECCA plans to distribute its Solar Tuki lamp units through an affordable micro-financing program, expecting to reach 800 households within 24 months and the some 2.4 million households in Nepal still using wicked kerosene lamps by 2015.
