EthioGift Connects Ethiopians at Home and Abroad

Activity Description: Operated by EthioLink in Addis Ababa, EthioGift is an online gift service allowing Ethiopia's diaspora to purchase products for delivery to friends and family throughout their homeland.


Managing Organization: Project Gaia

Activity Description: Rapid population growth is reducing the availability of traditional biomass (wood and dung) that is used to cook by 60% of all Africans. Project Gaia seeks to create a model by which a household market for alcohol based fuels for cooking can be developed on a commercially viable scale throughout developing countries. Working with diverse partners, including ITDG and the Shell Foundation, the project is developing a CleanCook stove that reduces indoor air pollution, and can be powered by ethanol and methanol that is produced locally.


Managing Organization: Mirte Stoves

Activity Description: Mirte Stoves have been specially designed for the production of injera (household bread), a staple food in Ethiopia. The Mirte Stove reduces energy consumption by 50% and eliminates the smoke emitted inside the house when Ethiopian families bake injera. By late 2000, over 90,000 Mirte stoves had been sold in Addis Ababa and a number of smaller urban and rural areas, leading to wood savings of over
