Activity Description: Juboken Enterprises converts coconut husks--which are cheap, plentiful, and normally discarded in the Phillippines--and converts them into useful products, such as fertilizer and erosion-prevention "coconets." These products are then sold to domestic and foreign farmers.

Key to this process is a "decortication" machine, which separates the husk fiber from the coconut; the machine was developed by agricultural engineer Justino Arboleda, the founder of Juboken.

In addition to recycling waste to create cheap, eco-friendly agricultural products, Juboken has created over 1600 jobs for Filippino farmers.

Editor's note:Coconets is the winner of the 2005 BBC World Challenge.

I am a curent Peace Corp volunteer in Nicaragua and I am interested in the process of coco-conversion. The same environment exist ie: abundant coconut trees and heavy soil erosion, and I would like more information on this if it is available. The idea is beautiful. Thankyou Lucas Brown

Mars and Lucas, I know of a few other examples of coconut fibers being used in manufacturing. In Brazil, the Poverty and Environment in Amazonia Research and Development project (POEMA) formed an alliance with the DaimlerChrysler car company. Through research, POEMA identified the use of coconut fibers in automobile headrests as a viable product and developed a low-technology production method for use by local populations. The success of the pilot project led to the expansion of the program, and POEMA created POEMAtec Fibras Naturalis da Amazonia (Amazon Natural Fibers), an independent company that works in partnership with POEMA. The WBCSD has a good case study about the business at 11511...

Also in Brazil, Ouro Fértil is a specialist in coconut fiber products. The company's unique technology and processing of coconut fiber has allowed it to penetrate market niches in the automobile industry (car seats cushions & interior car panels for soundproofing), the furniture industry (filler for mattresses, chairs and sofas), and in reforestation operations (tubes for eucalyptus and pine seedlings). More details at a-ltda...

Alibaba has an extensive list of coconut fiber products and industries at http://www.alibaba.com/countrysearch/ID-suppliers/Coconut_Fiber.html, and for a background of the coconut fiber manufacturing process check out http://www.madehow.com/Volume-6/Coir.html

I'm currently on my senior year in UPLB as an Agribusiness Management student. I come across this great product on BAR website and I'm wondering if you'll allow me to use it as my research topic. Hope to hear from you soon.

It is I, Agnes Curia Sarmiento who entered and submitted the winning entry coconets in theworldchallenge.com.uk contest but after the project won in November 2005 Justino Arboleda reneged on our agreementon the sharing of the grant won. Up to now he has not honored our sharing agreement and he has treated me shabbily by double crossing me.
