Activity Description: Janani is a non-profit Indian Society that uses a private sector model to implement a large health service delivery programme in three of the poorest states of India. Janani helps to redirect the energy of the private sector (an estimated 450,000 private doctors, 1.25 rural providers and 12 million shops in India) towards the poorer sectors.

In order to make services affordable to poorer clients, the programme uses a combination of subsidizing products, generating large caseloads, and using technology to make internal operations more efficient . Janani is also developing various sustainable franchise-clinic models; some of these clinics Janani owns and runs in partnership with doctors, others are owned and run entirely by doctor-entrepreneurs.

Among the largest needs for delivery are contraceptive services. In its eight years of work, Janani has prevented 3.84 million unwanted pregnancies.
