Activity Description: Telecom Networks Malawi (TN Malawi) recently launched its Community Phone program in order to fulfill its license mandate from the Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority. The Community Phone program distributes mobile phones to private operators who expect to turn a 35% profit margin from the business of selling mobile phone time to villagers who previously have had to travel to cities in order to make a phone call. TN Malawi is reviewing its rate scale, which currently begins at K15 (US$0.14) per minute. For the Community Phones to be a success, the per-minute rate will need to fall by 50-75 percent such that low-income customers can afford the service.
