Activity Description: Rapid population growth is reducing the availability of traditional biomass (wood and dung) that is used to cook by 60% of all Africans. Project Gaia seeks to create a model by which a household market for alcohol based fuels for cooking can be developed on a commercially viable scale throughout developing countries. Working with diverse partners, including ITDG and the Shell Foundation, the project is developing a CleanCook stove that reduces indoor air pollution, and can be powered by ethanol and methanol that is produced locally.
