Managing Organization:
Thailand Ministry of Information and Communication Technology
|
Activity Description:
Thailand's Information, Communications, and Technology (ICT) Ministry's People's PC project is offering the public affordable PCs. The bare-bones PCs, which cost as little as $260 for a desktop and $465 for a laptop, come loaded with Celeron processors from Intel Corp., a 20-gigabyte hard drive and Linux-based office software, including word processing. To help speed adoption, the ministry has agreed to take on service and support issues related to the PCs and its open-source operating system. The program had distributed about 50,000 PCs to ordinary citizens by mid 2003 and aims to deliver a million by the end of 2004.
