Activity Description: Researchers at the Carnagie Mellon-West Coast campus are developing a Multifunction Information Appliance called PCtvt. The device is an all-inclusive electronic appliance that includes Television, Personal Video Recorder, Video Phone, Internet Protocol Phone, and Personal Computer functionality. They hope to offer the device at a price point under $250, as it is intended for the four billion people around the world who live on less than $2,000 a year. Bundling ICT-enabled services into one machine and marketing it using its capacity as an entertainment center makes the PCtvt more attractive than other IT products targeted at poor consumers. Statistics and anecdotal evidence points to bottom-of-the-pyramid consumers' willingness to spend upwards of 5% of their annual income on entertainment, especially television. By bundling other IT services with a television, the PCtvt achieves significant value-add for consumers who are looking to move from static to interactive entertainment and home technology. The priority market for the PCtvt appears to be India, where Bollywood produces plenty of content (television shows, DVDs) appealing to lower-income consumers.
