Activity Description:
The Association of the Computer and Multimedia Industry of Malaysia (Pikom) has unveiled its PC Gemilang program, which offers top-line desktop computers to the public for around US $250 (RM 1,000). The new, lower prices for PCs will enable more Malaysians, especially those living in rural communities, to own their own computer. Only 26 percent of the five million households in Malaysia own computers; according to Pikom estimates, the rate for rural households is just 9.6 percent. PC Gemilang buyers will be able to buy either a Linux-based or Windows-based system, both of which are powered by a 1.7GHz processor, with 128 MB RAM, a 40GB hard drive, 56Kbps modem, CD-ROM and floppy drives, and a 15 inch monitor. The 1,000 RM price is about half the cost of a similar computer on the Malaysian commercial market. To help low-income customers afford the computers, Pikom is helping to facilitate loans from several banks and a cooperative.
