Activity Description: Using SMS (Short Messaging Service), or text messaging, On-Cue Compliance is helping to reduce reoccurring medical problems due to non-compliance (not taking prescription medication) by sending patients timely reminders via their personal cellphones. The technology used to send out the messages is extremely low-cost and robust: an open source software operating system, Web server, mail transport agent, applications, and a database. Client info is entered into a database and every half an hour the computer server reads the database and sends personalised messages to the patients, reminding them to take their medication. Currently, the system is being used in the treatment of tuberculosis patients in Cape Town, South Africa, with almost a 100% success rate.
