Activity Description: WIZZIT is a cellphone-based banking facility whose target market is the estimated 16 million unbanked or underbanked South Africans - about 60 percent of the country's population. Unlike its competitors (FNB and MTN), WIZZIT does not require users to have a bank account and is compatible with early generation cell phones popular in low-income communities. The facility even works with customers who use pay-as-you-go cellphones - another distinction. In addition to being able to conduct cellphone-to-cellphone transactions, WIZZIT account holders are issued Maestro debit cards that can be used at any ATM or retailer. WIZZIT charges per-transaction fees that range from 99c (USD 0.15) to R4.99 (USD 0.78) and does not charge a monthly fee nor require a minimum balance. There are no transaction limitations - the service is purely pay-as-you-go. WIZZIT employs over 800 "Wizz Kids" - typically unemployed university graduates from low-income communities - to promote the product and help unbanked customers open accounts.

Hi Herman,

Sorry to hear you're having a bit of trouble with WIZZIT.  NextBillion doesn't serve as the firm's customer service, however.  You might have better luck texting or calling their phone number:  0860 949 948 or visiting the web site.

Good luck!

Rob

Hi Herman,

The money should be in your account usually after one working day. This is not Wizzit's fault but rather the clearing system of the other banks. If your account number is correct (the one in your Wizzit pack), as well as the branch code, there should not be a problem.

Good luck using the product. Hope it makes your banking as easy as it has made mine.

I am an FNB user and tried their new cellphone banking product...it was not very good to be polite. I heard about Wizzit and called their centre - the service was unreal and so I gave the product a try. I can pay all my bills at extremely low costs! I can transfer money to anyone in the world! This product changed my perceptions of banking. Wizzit needs to go global, a company that actually looks after the client! The call centre support and help was amazing too. I also love the aim of the company - banking for the unbanked. I have looked around on the net for similar products but found nothing. If anyone knows please respond; because Wizzit needs to be looked at very closely. It will change banking forever. Well done Wizzit inventors, hope you are richly rewarded some day!

Roger - a firm supporter of Wizzit cellphone banking.

How to use my cellphone to check my balance

Wizzit is such a brilliant concept and seem to have been sucessfully implemented in South Africa. My company together with a financial institution is interested in implementing this service in West Africa so that we can also enjoy this convinient service. How do we go about it

Kiki, your best bet in terms of implementing a Wizzit-like model in West Africa is to contact the firm yourself - start with Brian Richardson - or you may want to get in touch with the CGAP people (Consultative Group to Assist the Poor) at the World Bank Group. They have a fast-growing m-banking practice and would be a great place to start.

I am so impressed with this product. My son now has a bank account with Wizzit and while I sit in Port Elizabeth I can send money to him instantaneously onto his Wizzit Maestro card in Cape Town - at the lowest cost possible. Compared to the prices the other South African banks charge Wizzit is FAR CHEAPER. Why is this company not advertising on the television? It will change the way the poor bank. Or actually the world. It is such a good invention. Well done whoever had the know-how to make such a clever way to move money safely and quickly. I wish I was your partner! All the best, Faizel Stroby.

My mom who is unemployed and does not have much of an education has been introduced to this product. She was told that this is endevour by an overseas company wanting wanting to better the lives of south Africans. What i don't understand is that she was told she is going to receive a monthly income with this account R3000 per month and if she introduces more people the amount will increase to R6000 per months. The package apparently also comes with monthly groceries. This does not sound real and i don't think it would be fair to raise poor people's hopes like that.

Kiki, Hi. I read your post after reading about Wizzit technology. I am excited that you want to bring this model to West Africa becuase I truly believe this is the future of banking for the "unbanked". Currently, I am a graduating senior studying finance at Loyola University in New Olreans. I worked for over 4 months in Ghana where I was exposed to the microfinance industry. I plan to make a career within microfinance, however there are extremely limited opportunities in the United States. I would like to be a part of creating a Wizzit type model in West Africa. E mail me if you are interested. Exportafrica@gmail.com. I will be looking forward to hearing from you
