Activity Description:

MIGHTYLIGHT is a simple-to-use, long-life, environmental friendly, pollution free, multi-purpose light using not only solar power but also most innovatively using a high technology, extremely energy efficient LED as its light source. This LED consumes only 1 Watt power and is rated to last 100,000 hours i.e. more than 30 years at the rate of 8 hour consumption per day (instead of conventional bulbs that consume much more power and fuse often).

The product addresses the need for safe, affordable lighting for millions of people not only in villages but also small towns and even cities who face electricity shortages and high costs of power consumption.

I caught your article in Time Magazine (LIBERATION TECHNOLOGY). First the facts! India needs to develope new and innovative technology so it can compete in the world market? India is lagging behind? From that article in Time Magazine, I noticed that the real need is: Power (electricity)? Power for everyone, instead for a select few dotted here and there? The Green approach is fine but, It is not likely everyone will get it(electricity)? Why? It will take financial muscle from developed nations to back any type innovation going into these areas of the world? Next, is the technology? The evolution of any these innovations can liberate anyone if they shall ask? It is that simple! Sincerly, firewalker4334@yahoo.com

The Mightylight is not advanced technology? It is nothing but a political statement from Time Magazine? Substancial financial backing was not supported in the text? So, it is not advanced? The technology(led) and solar technology have been around for some time now? The problem is: that this technology has not experianced any liberation since they have been invented? No new advances or innovation in these areas of energy? Effeciency yes! Advances no! Does the Mightylight and It's creators really want to liberate these parts of the world with this technology? I would like the challenge of liberating the Mightylight! Just ask! Sincerly, firewalker4334@yahoo.com

Just wondering how those millions of people - most of whom live on a dollar a day - are going to afford a 50 USD lamp (and that's when it's still in India, so add cost of distribution, intermediaries, duties, margins, etc)? It's a nice product, and I especially like that a lot of effort has gone into some proper sturdy design, but I fear that it's probably not affordable for the poor? Sincerely, Adriaan

Adrian, I share your concerns about Mightylight's affordability. I thought the same thing when I first read about KickStart's Moneymaker irrigation pumps, which sell in Africa for $90. How can a poor African farmer possibly afford a $90 pump? But the farmers see how the Moneymaker helps them increase their income, so they save or borrow the money. In the case of Mightylight, if having light after dark could increase a family's income, then it probably is "affordable". In most cases, this is a luxury, but I'm sure there are BOP customers out there whose businesses could stay open later, or operate more effectively, with a Mightylight. That's your market, at least to start.

Here's my informal consumer report: In Nov 2006, I bought 3 MightyLights even though the shipping charges from India were very hefty. I wanted one for a charity in Haiti, one to demo to anyone interested, and one for myself. I've tried it around the house and on a camping trip, and am very pleased with it so far (3 months later). But I sure wouldn't recommend it for widespread use until both the price and shipping costs come down. As far as I know, there are no distributors outside India yet. CosmosIgnite in India was very helpful and fast with my order, but it did require a PayPal payment since they don't take credit cards directly.
